Thug Life: Volume 1 Album Info: (from HipHopDOA.com)
Thug Life: Volume 1 is the debut studio album by the rap group Thug Life. The group was started by Tupac and also featured fellow rappers Big Syke, Macadoshis, Mopreme, and The Rated R. The album was originally released on September 26, 1994, by Tupac’s record label, Out Da Gutta Records. Although the album was originally released on Out Da Gutta, Amaru Entertainment, (the label owned by Afeni Shakur, the mother of Tupac), has since gained the rights to it.
The fact that the title contains “Volume: 1″ has created much debate as to whether this album is part of an unfinished project by Tupac and/or the Thug Life group. It has been said that ‘pac created two other versions of this album, with many of the songs still remaining unreleased. Also, due to heavy criticism on gangsta rap at the time, the original version of the album was scrapped and re-recorded with many of the original songs being cut. Tupac even performed the track that was originally planned to be the first single from the album, “Out on Bail” at the 1994 Source Awards. This track has since been released on the 2004 posthumus Tupac album Loyal To The Game.
Thug Life member Big Syke has since stated in an interview with DonKilluminati.com that in 1996 Big Syke and Tupac had planned to create ‘Thug Life: Vol. 2 – Out On Bail’ which would have been released on Tupac’s planned Makaveli Records label, but 2Pac’s murder prevented this from becoming a reality. Many of the songs
that were recorded for use on this album, or around the time the album was been made have since been released on various posthumus Tupac album releases, most notebably 1997′s R U Still Down? (Remember Me).
At least nine of those unused tracks and interludes were released on R U Still Down? (Remember Me), including the likes of “Nothing to Lose” and “My Definition of a Thug Nigga” and even the interlude “Where Do We Go From Here?”. Tupac himself also used the track “Death Around the Corner” for his next solo release, Me Against The World……
